Day 13: Making progress
(September 10, 2004)
Russ maps the site
We arrived on site this morning to perfect conditions – glass smooth water with perfect visibility, but the winds arrived the same time we did. Blowing out of the south, we were somewhat protected by Cave Point, and a fortuitous southerly current kept the murky waters from covering the site until late in the afternoon. Taking advantage of the conditions, we made significant progress in mapping today.
Paul records measurements
Paul Lothary joined us today to help with mapping the site, and each diver made two two-hour dives. With the good visibility we were able to map large portions of the wreck. Each diver was assigned a 20-foot section of the baseline. Using several measuring tapes and a plastic underwater slate to record measurements, accurate drawings were made by each diver of their section.
Paul tranfers data
With much mapping completed, much of the evening was spend transferring our measurements to graph paper to produce the overall site plan. Each diver adds their 20-foot section to the site plan, producing an accurate, to-scale drawing of the site.
