Project Objectives
Archaeologists and divers from the WHS will be working on a variety of projects in 2004. The two larger projects include the documentation of the schooners Perry Hannah and Cecelia that lie along the remains of Reynold’s Pier in Jacksonport, and the photodocumentation of the Lucerne, Pretoria, and Sevona in the Apostle Islands. There will also be deepwater surveys utilizing Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) technology in Lake Michigan off southeastern Wisconsin.
Common objectives for the projects include:
• To contribute to the archaeological record by obtaining valuable information on the shipbuilding and maritime history of the Great Lakes.
• To gather data for nominating these shipwrecks to the National Register of Historic Places.
• To expand the WHS’s inventory of Wisconsin shipwrecks, thereby helping managers preserve these resources.
• To collect archaeological information that will be used for creating interpretive materials for divers and non-divers interested in Great Lakes shipwrecks and maritime history. These materials include shore-side signage, waterproof dive guides, and web based media.
Objectives Specific to the Apostle Islands:
• Create highly detailed photomosaics of the Lucerne, Pretoria, and Sevona.
• Compare new data to documentation carried out nearly a decade ago to observe any long-term changes in sites.
Objectives Specific to the Jacksonport Project:
• Create highly detailed site plans of the Cecelia, Perry Hannah, and Reynold’s Pier.
• Produce waterproof dive guide for the Jacksonport site.
• Produce Maritime Trails Marker for Lakeside Town Park, Jacksonport.
