Today the team made great progress in mapping the wreck site. The baseline and cross lines divided the wreck into sixteen 10 foot sections. Each team member was first assigned one ten foot section of the wreck. After mapping their section, team members then worked with Russel Leitz, who showed them how to efficiently transfer their drawing onto the overall site plan. Slowly the site plan grew one ten foot section at a time.

With a great team effort over the last two days, all sections were sketched and transferred to the overall site plan by Tuesday evening. Each section fit almost perfectly with each adjacent section, even though the majority of the mapping team had no prior wreck mapping experience!

Tommorrow the team will review the site plan and return to the wreck site to review any areas that require further detail. Once the site plan is finalized it will then be inked in. While part of the team inks the site plan, other team members will perform a survey of the wreck’s surrounding area, searching for any parts of the wreck they may be in outlaying areas.

The final step will be to map the wreck site into the surrounding area using a total station survey system.
