11 June 2005 The Pilgrim?, Jacksonport
(June 13, 2005)
On Saturday morning, WHS staff visited the wreck site of a three-masted schooner in Jacksonport, just north of the Reynolds’ pier site that was surveyed last season. Although unidentified, this wreck may be the Pilgrim, and may be included in future WHS survey work. The wreck is located at the end of the remains of Hibbard’s Pier, the northernmost historic lumber pier at Jacksonport. The Pilgrim was wrecked and abandoned at Jacksonport on September 20, 1883. The Pilgrim, along with Yankee Blade, Perry Hannah, and Cecelia, were all owned by Jane Long (of Chicago), and all wrecked at Jacksonport within a ten year period. The Yankee Blade was released, and the remains of the Perry Hannah and Cecelia (mapped during the 2004 field season) flank the pilings and cribs of Reynolds’s Pier (Jacksonport’s southernmost lumber pier).

On Saturday evening Tamara Thomsen gave a presentation to the Friends of Whitefish Dunes State Park, which held their Friends Group Meeting at the park’s Nature Center on Lake Michigan’s shore. Focusing on recent WHS underwater archaeology work throughout Door County, Tamara wowed the group with dramatic photographs of shipwrecks and archaeological documentation in Door County, including the Iris and Jacksonport’s shipwrecks.
