21 June 2005 Daniel Lyons, Algoma
(June 21, 2005)
Paul Bentley joined Ethan, Tami, and Keith today to photo mosaic the Daniel Lyons off Algoma. The group was greeted with glass calm seas with just a slight residual swell from the south from the previous day. Surface water temps were 55° Fahrenheit, with a bottom temp of 41°, and an incredible 75 feet of visibility.

The Daniel Lyons was a new site for all team members, and they were not disappointed. Although broken up, nearly all of the Daniel Lyons' hull structure is present, with major sections of the wreck intact. The Daniel Lyons is ideal for anyone wishing to learn about Great Lakes’ schooner construction, as major sections of the vessels are intact, but “opened up” to allow closer examination. The centerboard trunk is standing, complete with centerboard chain that runs to the centerboard winch that lays to the port side of the trunk. Both stem and stern posts are intact with deadwood. Much of the running rigging is present, including masts, topmasts, gaffs, booms, and wire rope – all strewn about the wreck but easily identified by divers.

Each team completed two dives, documenting the site with still photos and DPV-mounted digital video for later photo mosaic construction. The photo mosaic will be used to aid and structure a more comprehensive survey that will be conducted later this summer.
