Today, with assistance from the Great Lakes Shipwreck Research Foundation, the team installed the Daniel Lyons’ mooring buoy. Kimm Stabelfeldt joined Paul Bentley, Tamara Thomsen, and Keith Meverden for another day of fantastic conditions on Lake Michigan.

The mooring chain was attached to screw anchors and laying on the lake bottom, so the team first dropped a weighted buoy line, or shot line, on the wreck site. Kimm and Tami then descended the shot line and attached the end of the shot line to the end of the mooring chain, which Paul B. and Keith then pulled to the surface to attach the mooring buoy.

The team then removed old rope mooring lines that were attached by private divers that had become entangled in the wreck and abandoned. Removing these old lines makes the site safer for other divers, eliminating an entanglement hazard.

Tomorrow the R/V Neeskay will be on site of the Ocean Wave to drop a 2,000 lbs. mooring anchor for installation of a seasonal WHS mooring buoy. A list of all WHS mooring buoys with GPS coordinates is available online.

A special thank you goes to Beach Harbor Resort in Sturgeon Bay for providing the crew with a wonderful dinner with a gorgeous bay view. Thank you John!
