14 July 2005 Ocean Wave, Sevastopol
(July 14, 2005)

After a week of glass-calm seas and no problems, the team’s luck took a change for the worse today. When the R/V Dawn Treader’s engine failed to start at the dock in the morning, the R/V Orion got underway to the Ocean Wave with Tom, Gregg, and Tami aboard. After an hour’s work to correct the problem, the Dawn Treader finally got underway with Paul L., Paul B., Ethan, and Keith.

With northeast winds blowing throughout the previous night, the seas were anything but glass-calm. The R/V Orion arrived at the Ocean Wave and tied to the mooring buoy, but after a few minutes it was obvious that conditions were less than ideal for getting divers safely into, and out of, the water. With occasional waves approaching 5 feet in height, the decision was made to abort the dives for the day, and the Orion headed back to Baileys Harbor. Meeting the Dawn Treader 5 miles south of Baileys Harbor, the two vessels returned to the harbor to await better diving conditions.
