1 August 2005 Daniel Lyons, Algoma
(August 01, 2005)
The Daniel Lyons Project began today with Paul Lothary, Christa Loutalot, Russ Lietz, Keith Meverden, and Tamara Thomsen. As with the Ocean Wave survey, the Daniel Lyons project is utilizing a photo mosaic that was produced from digital video that was taken during our June dives. The photo mosaic was constructed in Adobe Photoshop from approximately 400 still images that were captured from the video, and printed at a scale of one inch equals 4 feet (1” = 4’). The mosaic was then traced with pencil onto graph paper to be corrected with diver-collected information.
The divers worked in teams of two, with Russ Lietz serving as Divemaster and boat tender. Visibility on the bottom was 40 feet, with a bottom temperature of 42° Fahrenheit. Divers made sketches and took measurements of wreck sections to add detail and correct any errors present in the photo mosaic.

Dive vessels for the Daniel Lyons survey are the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute’s R/V Dawn Treader, and the Wisconsin Maritime Museum’s Icelander, a 30-foot ex-Coast Guard utility boat. Special thanks goes to Bill from the Algoma Municipal Marina, who graciously donated his garage for use as a fill station for the nightly chore of filling SCUBA tanks for the next day’s dive.
