3 August 2005 Daniel Lyons, Algoma
(August 03, 2005)
A dense fog met the crew this morning as they made their way onto Lake Michigan. Emerging from the fog 4 miles from Algoma, the crew was able to get one dive in before the seas began reaching five to six feet. Abandoning the second dive for the day, the crew made their way back to Algoma, encoutering an even thicker fog than when they departed. Two miles out of Algoma, visibility dropped to approximately 200 feet, and was now coupled with a large south sea, giving the team a taste of the fickle nature of the Great Lakes. Despite the conditions, the team arrived safely at the Algoma Municipal Marina aboard the two very seaworthy vessels. The remainder of the afternoon was spent filling tanks for the following day’s diving and filling in the site plan with gathered information.

The town of Algoma has shown us tremendoues hospitality during the project. Today special thanks goes to Margo Rouse of the Roustabout Inn, who not only provided lodging, but allowed us to occupy her phone lines to post Notes from the Field.
