John Karl receives safety briefing on use of immersion suits
After an evening spent rewiring and splicing cables, Rob Paddock assured the WHS team that the ROV was set and ready to make another attempt at surveying the scow schooner Tennie & Laura. Paul Bentley and John Karl of University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute joined Tom, Bob, Tami and Keith for another day of clear skies and glass calm seas aboard the R/V Neeskay.

The deployment and initial decent of the ROV went as planned, but suddenly the upward thruster failed and again the ROV had to be returned to Neeskay. After a replacement thruster was installed, the ROV was again launched and a search of the immediate vicinity of the wreck site revealed a ceramic cup, plate, and several large burbot, or lawyerfish.

Soon after the ROV reached the lakebed a moderate current developed that began pushing the R/V Neeskay, and the ROV, from the wreck site. The inflatable workboat was launched to aid in positioning and maintaining the R/V Neeskay over the wreck. The ROV was able to survey standing rigging still supporting one of Tennie & Laura’s masts.

Tomorrow the WHS team will continue to video document construction techniques by piloting the ROV along Tennie & Laura’s railing and outer hull.
