The group again divided into three teams. Tiffany and Dr. Rodgers completed the land survey. Adam and Brian continued baseline setup, and Dina, Michelle, Stephanie, and Sami began mapping near the bow.
Tiffany sites in the total station
To finish baseline setup, Adam and Brian were first in the water, strapping a tape measure to the baseline and nailing it into the keelson where possible. Zebra mussels were scraped from the keelson section several feet to the bow and stern areas to avoid large discrepancies or “dips” in the baseline.
Once finished with the baseline set up, Adam and Brian joined Dina, Michelle, Stephanie, and Sami in their assigned 10-foot sections where mapping began. In some areas mussels were 8 inches thick, so the team employed scrapers and trowels to remove them. Mussels were cleared from the keelson moving parallel with the ships lines, pushing the mussel debris outward toward the extant of the vessel.
Decorative ironwork
Several pieces of decorative metalwork were found while clearing the mussels from the vessel, ranging from from fragments to larger pieces 10” x 3” x 1” in dimension. These pieces had a design of two intersecting lines at 1” along the longitudinal plane of the metal.
