The fourth day of surveying began with a briefing by Dr. Rodgers about the type of vessel being documented. Drawings depicting the progression of canalers to steam barges to bulk carriers were examined, as well as a cross section of their construction. It was noted that steam barges and bulk carriers developed hogging trusses to compensate for the increasing length of the vessels and also to offset the weight of the engines and boilers.

Dr. Rodgers and Tiffany began their working day by continuing to survey the shoreline with the total station. They completed their work and returned to the cottages to transfer their coordinates on a map. The divers, including Stephanie, Sami, Dina, Michelle, Brian , and Adam, continued working on their allocated grids.

The divers made several observations during their two dives. Every diver reported heavy charring and burning of the timbers in their grids. Adam, who is working in the 30-40 foot starboard side grid, uncovered broken ceramics, long iron fasteners, and twisted metal strips with decoration. Michelle, working in the 20-30 foot port side grid, observed a large iron ring about one foot in diameter and other scattered pieces of iron. She completed mapping this unit during her first dive and moved to the 40-50 port side unit where she noticed that a section of the hull had collapsed on top of the ceiling which runs into Brian’s 30-40 foot port side unit.
