14 September 2005 Joys, Sturgeon Bay
(September 14, 2005)
Today started out cold and blustery. The wind shifted to the northwest and was now coming in from Green Bay, causing large waves and a chill in the air. Site conditions, which had over ten feet of visibility, were now less than four. The bottom was stirred up, and the surge continued to stir the bottom even more as the waves passed over the site. Mapping continued, and the group persevered for a third dive as the afternoon wind and waves calmed significantly.

Significant portions of the wreck have been burned away. This is not uncommon in shipwreck sites; vessels are often grounded and burned to the water line. The Sunset Park site is different, however, in that the vessel seems to be more charred on the lower frames than on the upper frames, making it unlikely that it burned to the water line. The presences of artifacts, together with evidence of burning, suggest a different story. Perhaps the vessel wasn’t intentionally grounded and burned?
Green Bay's Fox News team was on site today to interview the team about underwater archaeological work and why there are so many wrecks within Sturgeon Bay.
