Exploring Wisconsin's Lake Michigan Shipwrecks

An underwater archaeologist from the Society examines the propeller of the Frank O'Connor, located in Door County

Follow a chronicle of shipwreck exploration in Oak Creek and Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. From September 3rd to October 6th, underwater archaeologists from the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) and East Carolina University's Program in Maritime Studies, with assistance from Wisconsin Sea Grant and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Great Lakes WATER Institute, will examine several historic shipwrecks and describe their work in daily postings of journal entries and photographs.

Having successfully concluded the diving portion of their work, the archaeologists are now processing the data they gathered. They are also conducting further research in the history of the vessels. The researchers will update this Web site as they complete the maps of the wrecks and learn more about their history.
