Description:
Constructed between 1872 and 1879, the Sturgeon Bay ship canal allowed vessels to cut through the Door peninsula instead of using the dangerous Deaths Door passage at the tip of the county. The lighthouse at the eastern end of the canal is an active aid to navigation and part of a busy U.S. Coast Guard Station. The steel tower was built in 1899, and still has its original third order Fresnel lens. The North Pier Head Light, built in 1882, can also be seen at the end of the breakwater. The red-painted lighthouse sits at the end of the North Pier, and is connected to shore via a raised catwalk. It is not open to the public. Both of these lighthouses can be seen from the grounds of the Coast Guard station. Please contact the Sturgeon Bay Coast Guard Station regarding access to the station grounds. You can also view the lighthouses from Sturgeon Bay Canal Park, immediately south of the canal.
