Description: A few miles off the tip of the Door County peninsula lies Washington Island. A friendly year-round home to 700 people, the island is also an enchanting destination for thousands of visitors each year. The Washington Island Ferry Line is the vital transportation link across storied Death's Door passage. Reaching the north end of Highway 42, a new world appears as travelers are greeted by the Northport ferry pier and a magnificent view of adventures ahead. Once people, vehicles and freight are safely on board, the excitement begins as the ferry navigates out across Porte des Morts. The 30-minute crossing is filled with sights and sounds. Gulls, ducks and birds soar by. Nearby Plum, Pilot and Detroit Islands form a scenic backdrop. Water stretching to the horizons churns beneath the hull. History comes alive with recollections of Native Americans in canoes, hearty French explorers, and the busy schooner traffic of a century ago. Please contact the ferry service for schedules and fees.
