| Description: |
Built in 1876 as the local sheriff's office, residence and county jail, today the Kewaunee County Historical Museum houses a wealth of historical photographs and artifacts from Kewaunee County. Displays range from a recreation of a pioneer family's late 19th century living room to woodcarvings of Custer's Last Stand. The maritime history of the Kewaunee area is captured in photographs, depicting the Ann Arbor Carferry No. 1 from the late 19th century, as well as ships built by the Kewaunee Engineering Corp. Locally built ships and tugs are featured as models in the museum. One such model is a representation of the USS Peublo, launched from Kewaunee in 1944 and captured by North Korea as a spy vessel in 1968. The museum also has several maritime artifacts, including a lifeboat oar from the Ann Arbor Carferry No. 1, circa 1900.
